ARCHITECT OF PHOENIX ART MUSEUM
Alden @ PhxArt is named to honor the legacy of Alden B. Dow F.A.I.A., the architect of the original museum building that opened to the public in 1959. Mr. Dow graduated from the Beaux Arts Architectural Program at Columbia University in New York City and went on to join Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Fellowship in the spring of 1933. After his time with Wright, Dow returned to Michigan to open his own thriving architectural firm, becoming a leading expert in organic architecture and influencing generations of other architects. Because of his work and influence, his hometown of Midland has more than 400 mid-century modern structures, built between 1930-1970.
Throughout his 50-year career, Mr. Dow designed more than 600 projects across Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Oklahoma, California, Connecticut, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Indiana, North Carolina, New York, and Michigan. He received numerous honors and awards and was named Fellow in the American Institute of Architecture, as well as Architect Laureate of The State of Michigan. The Alden B. Dow Home and Studio was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989 and offers daily tours and immersive educational programming for all ages.
